antique imari gaiwan
A very rare find, these antique porcelain Japanese gaiwans originate sometime in the Meiji period (1868-1913), and possibly older. Holding approximately 6 oz., these stunning Imari gaiwans will please even the most discerning tea afficionado.
Beautifully hand-decorated with Japanese flowers, the gold-leaf encrusted gaiwans feature peonies and chrysanthemums that carry over the rim and into the interiors of the bowls as well as on the under-side of the lids. One side of the gaiwans feature peonies and the other side chrysanthemums.
Fuku ("Happiness") marks are found on the base of the bowls and the tops of the lids, making this a wonderful wedding or other gift for a pair of tea lovers.
Gaiwans are in remarkable condition, with light signs of wear. Occasional (rare) flea bites on foot rings, but no chips, hairline cracks or signs of repair can be found. Paint/decoration is in exceptional condition.
We found a set of 5 of these antique gaiwans, which we are offering here for individual sale at a price that is difficult to resist.
Note: tea cup and wood platform in photos are not included in the purchase.
